We’ve been furnished with a report detailing suggested changes to the waste & recycling collections throughout the Stirling Area. The bullet points are as follows but there is more detail in the attached report on the thinking behind the proposals. The Council are looking to be discussing this soon so any feedback or comments you have should be shared with Stirling Council directly to communityengagement@stirling.gov.uk
- Grey and blue bins to go to four weekly collections
- Brown bin to stay two weekly free for food waste, £35 annual charge for garden waste
- Green to stay four weekly
- Glass collection to end in 2022 and then glass can be put into blue bin.
The full report is attached below
I appreciate the need for cost savings however reducing a service that is essential for many family households is a step too far! Our grey bin is full within the current 2 week collection calendar so extending this to a 4 weekly collection will result in overflowing bins, strewn waste thanks to the local aggressive birds and I would suggest an increase in vermin also! As for a separate charge to collect garden waste that is ridiculous! I would imagine the increased administration costs related to this would far out way any financial benefit to the council indeed I would surmise it would actually cost more to implement than the revenue retrieved! I strongly disagree to any of these changes being implemented and would suggest the council reconsiders this as a possible cost saving exercise promptly.
The Grey Bin and Brown Bins should be moved to weekly if any changes. Green and Blue could be 4 weeks.
Other areas charge for garden waste and presumably the Council’s decided that it is financially advantageous. What alternatives do you suggest for cost savings?
I do not agree with the above proposal, we will be overflowing with rubbish if left for a month this will cause a rat infestation as there will be black bags of rubbish and fly tipping everywhere.
Brown bins you are going to charge £35 and doing away with the glass box so where do we put our glass just remember there are lots of low paid family’s who are struggling as it is this is ridiculous, you had a significant council tax increase, to say I am shocked is an understatement
Shocking to even consider this as a family of five we struggle as it is with general waste in addition to correctly using all recycling options . I would need to make w weekly tip visit to stop rubbish lying around encouraging vermin . Happy to pay for garden waste as that may be seen as a luxury but the fortnightly general needs to stay .
Glass to eventually go into blue bin
This is ridiculous I struggle on a 2 week collection being a family of 5 with a toddler and a disabled child I must add that I also recycle. You can’t except a family to go 4 weeks your going to create more work for the council to pick
Up the rubbish, deal with pest control and the constant phone calls you will be getting peolw complaining. So please listen to everyone DON’T MAKE THE CHANGES
Hope the council is prepared to deal with additional fly-tipping resulting from this.
I fully agree with all the comments made by Hazel Ritchie.
This proposal will increase cost due to fly tipping and folk just dumping rubbish. With respect to garden waste, how about subsidising compost bins again?
As a pensioner £35 extra every year is a problem as my income is fixed.
I do not support this proposal.
Terrible idea! Grey & blue bins will be full by week 3. There won’t be any room for glass in the blue bins either. There are no community glass recycling bins in Dunblane. You should be making it easier for people to recycle instead of making everything harder.
I have family in the Aberdeen, Perth and Edinburgh areas, where they are charged for garden waste uplift, so was expecting Stirling council to follow suit. The idea of reducing uplift of grey bins seems crazy. My grey bin is full after a fortnight, and I do religiously recycle.
Unfortunately I don’t agree with this proposal. As a family of 5 we would struggle with a monthly pick up of the grey bin. Let’s not forget council tax has gone up this year and you want to cut services. Not happy!!!
I live in a block of 30 flats, ie 30 households. At present we do not have nearly enough bins for a two weekly collection so would require more than twice as many for a monthly collection.
Bottles may be returnable when the new system is introduced but what about glass jars?
This can’t happen! 4 weekly collections would be untenable! Overflowing bins will encourage rats, foxes etc….fly tipping at the moment is at an all time high, this will just make the situation worse…..Scotland is reliant on tourism ….The posts from recent beauty spots have shown us in a very poor light…..We need MORE rubbish collection,MORE maintenance of our streets, hills, castles, monuments, etc.not LESS! We should be spending money on surveillance ; clamp down on fly tipping ,fine companies doing it !
Cardboard is on the increase on line shopping and plastic waste reduction please review the policy and empty 2 weekly papers are also on the increase.please think again. Even worse when they miss the bin out. On push and pull.
I fully agree with all the comments made by Hazel Ritchie.
We are a 6 person family and both our grey and blue bins are full within the current 2 week collection calendar. Extending this to a 4 weekly collection will result in overflowing bins or more trips to the dump, especially if we have to put glass in the blue bin from 2022.
Grey bins need emptied at least every two weeks. Overflowing, smelly, seagull-raided, rat-infested, Grey Bin policy!
Not too bothered about the other changes – I know other councils charge for Brown bins
This is a big mistake. There must be other things that could save money before cutting this critical service? Grey bins must be emptied at least fortnightly. To charge for brown bins will discourage the recycling of garden waste which will instead be burned, fly tipped or put in other bins. Glass collection is one of the easiest recycling services and is well supported. Surely none of these would have come up in the participatory budgeting exercise…
Come on Stirling Council be creative!
Blue bin could last four weeks but not the grey.
I have no problem with a charge for green waste – less than £3 per month seems reasonable, as long as food waste still goes in as well. I worried about glass, but if it can go in re-cycling now, well and good, though an extra bin may well be needed for avid and conscientious re-cyclers.
However, there will be a real problem with fewer grey bin collections – potential health hazards, possible increased fly-tipping, and certainly a need for more than one bin per household. The whole proposal need to be re-examined.
For people who grow some of their own veg, I guess the waste can go in the grey bins What happens to waste from allotments? Charging for garden waste will inevitably lead to an increase in fly tipping. Presumably we will be given formal notice of any changes in current arrangements.
4 weekly collections are ok for green & blue bins. Grey bins should be kept at a max 2 weeks. It’s ridiculous to suggest a 4 weekly collection for this.
Totally unacceptable and quite unbelievable! Savings shown on the document do not take into account ‘real life’! The amount of money that will be needed to clean up all the dumped waste and glass that will implode from these measures will diminish any savings that are detailed! The beautiful countryside will be turned into a rubbish dump! I see this on a daily basis already without these measures in place! – I pay £1995 Council Tax – where does this money go? ‘Best in Class Waste Service!’ I think not!
Why do the lorries need to be changed again! The bins probably won’t fit, so another change of new wheelie bins and then getting rid of the ones we have, creating more plastic to be dumped!
What a mess!!
We are informed though the website of the proposed changes to the waste collection arrangements on the 29th of June and Stirling Council vote and pass the changes the following day (30th June)
What is the point of asking for thoughts on the proposed changes!
Never mind changes to the waste collection, how about changes to the council?
I strongly disagree with this proposal as it will lead to an increase of fly tipping and subsequent increase in vermin. As I walk round the area I see lots of litter including discarded bottles and cans which I doubt the council would uplift, it will remain for volunteers to pick up the rubbish. Stirling relies on tourism but I fear this proposal, if implemented will lead to the area becoming a rubbish tip.
Online shopping has led to an increase in the use of cardboard and plastic and in my case the green and blue bins fill up more quickly than the grey bin( we are a family of 2)
At present a missed collection due to people away or illness etc.it can be 6-8 weeks between uplifts
The proposal includes an issue of new bins, is this really necessary ?
What happens to the old bins are they recyclable?
If introduced ,will the new bins be recyclable ?
