posted 21 Feb 2013, 06:26 by Joanne Green

A small team of local people have recently got together with the aim of gaining Bridge of Allan ‘Fairtrade Town’ status and, as Fairtrade Fortnight begins on 25 February, a range of events are planned. The events are open to everyone and are intended to be fun and informative - why not come along to an event and find out more about Bridge of Allan’s Fairtrade aim:

·         Saturday 2 March 10 am: Fair Trade graffiti artwork – let your artistic skills flourish spreading the Fairtrade word! Open to all ages. Free event (donations welcome). Meet at Bridge of Allan co-op store, Fountain Road.

·         Saturday 2 March 12 noon: meet Fairtrade producer, Taysir Arbasi (Director of Zaytoun) as he joins in the graffiti artwork (visit for more information about this Fairtrade producer).

·         Sunday 10 March 7.30 pm: Pub quiz at the Allanwater Brewhouse. Come and test your general knowledge while enjoying a glass or two of the brewery’s specially brewed Fair Trade ale. £3 each, maximum six per team, event limited to 60 people. Tickets available from the brewery, or contact Rachael.

Rachael Cooper-Bohannon, who is leading the development of Fair Trade in Bridge of Allan, said “we’re really excited about making Bridge of Allan a Fairtrade Town and hope you can come along to an event to have fun and show your support for Fair Trade”.

A Fair Trade group of Beaconhurst School pupils are creating a Fair Trade quiz suitable for primary-age children and a competition for nursery-age children and there is also a competition to design a Fair Trade logo for Bridge of Allan. The winning logo will be used by local businesses that support Fairtrade. Entries can be submitted to boxes provided in the library and Co-op. Craig Walford, of Bridge of Allan Co-op, says “The Co-op is an enormous supporter of Fair Trade, and we are delighted to support Bridge of Allan in its quest to a Fairtrade town”.

In collaboration with Fair Trade Stirling and a new group at Stirling University, the Bridge of Allan team will be organising more events over the coming year as Bridge of Allan works towards gaining Fairtrade town status. More events and activities are planned over the coming year and if you would like to become more involved in this ambition, or would like more information on the planned events please contact Rachael on 07748 946730 or email:
